Everything you need to know about the 17 big beer tents at Oktoberfest

The inside of the Oktoberfest beer tents is the main attraction of the world-famous beer festival. There are 14 big beer tents at the main Oktoberfest area and also 3 traditional Oktoberfest tents at the special area of the "Old Oktoberfest". Unique atmosphere with lavish decoration and thousands of people partying together makes the experience inside the Oktoberfest tents so special.

Inside every Oktoberfest tent is a live band that plays the typical Oktoberfest music hits which is a variety of well-known German, English, Italian and Spanish pop and rock songs.

The big Oktoberfest beer tents are usually opened from 10 am to 11.30 pm. By 10.30 pm the music finishes and drinks are stopped being served.

On the first Oktoberfest day as well as on the public holiday (Oct. 3rd) the festival grounds and the tents open at 9 am.

The name "Bräurosl" can be translated to "Brewery Rosl" which back in the days was a reference to the name of brewery's daughter named "Rosl". She became so famous amongst the guests for her beauty that the tent was named after her and the name is kept until today.

There is Hacker-Pschorr beer served and you can find a good variety of traditional Bavarian food with changing lunch offers. On the fist Sunday of the Oktoberfest the gay and lesbian community meets in this tent for a big party which makes the tent especially packed on this day.

6. Schottenhammel

The Schottenhammel Oktoberfest tent is known for hosting the popular festival's opening ceremony on the first day of Oktoberfest. The traditional tapping at Oktoberfest: O'zapft is!

Every year millions of visitors arrive in Munich to experience the world’s largest beer festival. But Oktoberfest doesn’t officially begin until one legendary moment: the tapping of the first beer barrel on the first day at noon by the mayor of Munich . Known as the "Anstich" in German, this ceremony is the symbolic and festive start to the 16–18 days of beer, Bavarian culture and celebration.

The history behind the tapping ceremony

The tradition of the ceremonial tapping (Anstich) began in 1950 , when then-Mayor Thomas Wimmer tapped the first keg of beer in the Schottenhamel Tent , one of the oldest tents at Oktoberfest. With two swift blows of the mallet, he declared, “O’zapft is!” —Bavarian dialect for “It’s tapped!”—and a tradition was born.

Since then, every Mayor of Munich has continued the ritual, and no beer is served in any tent until the first keg is officially opened.

How it works

The ceremony takes place at 12:00 noon sharp on Oktoberfest’s opening Saturday .
The Mayor of Munich , accompanied by high-ranking Bavarian politicians and dignitaries, enters the Schottenhamel tent.
Surrounded by media and eager guests, the Mayor hammers a wooden tap into the first barrel of beer.
Once tapped, the Mayor shouts: “O’zapft is!”
This is followed by a 12-gun salute on the steps of Bavaria’s Ruhmeshalle, signaling that beer can now be served in all other tents.

Beer tapping records

Over the years, how many blows of the mallet the Mayor needs has become part of the fun and a matter of pride. The fewer the blows, the better!

The record is just 2 blows —a feat achieved by several mayors, most recently by Mayor Dieter Reiter , who has become known for his confident and efficient tapping style.

On the other hand, some mayors have needed up to 19 blows , making for a much more entertaining start to the Oktoberfest.

Getting to Oktoberfest Munich

by Subway (U-Train / "U-Bahn")

Munich's subway system or also called "U-Bahn" system is one of the easiest ways to reach Oktoberfest.

Take U4 or U5 and exit at the station of "Theresienwiese" or "Schwanthalerhöhe" , both are located right by the Oktoberfest festival grounds.

Take U3 or U6 and take the exit at the station "Goetheplatz" or "Poccistraße" , which are both located close to the Oktoberfest.

Underground trains run frequently, usually every few minutes, making it a quick and reliable option.

The Suburban S-Train are called "S-Bahn" in German and can be recognized by its green "S" signs. The lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7 and S8 can bring you very close to the Oktoberfest. Exit the S-Bahn train at the Hackerbrücke station from where you can walk in about 10 minutes to the Theresienwiese, where the Munich Oktoberfest is located. You will see a huge crowd of people walking the same direction. Those people are all heading towards the Theresienwiese and so the Oktoberfest.

There are several Tram lines that are going towards the Oktoberfest. You can take Tram lines with the numbers 16, 18 and 19 and get out at the following stations from where you can then easily walk the rest to the festival grounds:

With the tram line 18 and 19 get out at the station Holzapfelstraße or Hermann-Lingg-Straße .

Tram lines 16 and 18 also go to the station Hackerbrücke , from where you can walk to the Oktoberfest festival grounds within around 10 minutes.

by Bike / Scooter

In Munich it is possible to rent an electric scooter everywhere within the city center with different apps. E-scooter operating companies are Tier, Voi, Lime and Bolt. You can download the app and rent it short-term. This is an easy and cheap way to get to the Oktoberfest. Just be aware, it won't be that easy to drive through a crowd of people all walking to the festival grounds. Use an e-scooter to get to the next public transport station that then brings you to the Oktoberfest. There are special parking areas close to the Oktoberfest grounds for the electric scooters. -At the P+R close to the U-Bahn station "Fürstenried-West" there is a connection with the U-Bahn line U3 to Goetheplatz. From Goetheplatz it is a short walk to the Oktoberfest festival grounds

-At the P+R close to the S-Bahn station "Langwied" there is a connection with the S-Bahn line S3 to Hackerbrücke. From Hackerbrücke it is a 10 minute walk towards the Munich Oktoberfest.

There is also a sweeter beer version of "Radler" ("shandy") available, which is the Oktoberfest lager mixed with refreshing sparkling lemonade. The alcohol free Hofbräu beer is also available.

At the Hofbräu Oktoberfest tent the only size of beer you can order is one liter (≈ 1.06 US Quarts). The glass that is made to hold this amount of beer is called "Maßkrug" or "Mass" in German . For water and softdrink the size is either half a liter or a liter. Besides beer and softdrinks there is also wine available in this Oktoberfest tent.

Especially first-time visitors of the Hofbräu Oktoberfest tent often get tempted to finish the whole 1 liter Maßkrug at once. We do only recommend to down the whole drink if you want to be escorted by the security out of the tent, as it is not allowed to do this in the Hofbräu Oktoberfest tent.

1. Oktoberfest starts in September

The name of the Oktoberfest can be a bit misleading here. Nowadays the Oktoberfest actually starts on the third Saturday of September and lasts until the first days of October.

The first ever Oktoberfest actually had its opening day on October 17th, 1810. However, in Munich, the weather is usually very cold and rainy, and sometimes even snowy. For this reason it was decided to hold the festival earlier in the year. September often has warmer and sunnier weather, making it a much better time for the world's largest beer festival.

2. Locals call it "Wiesn"

The area in Munich where the Oktoberfest takes place is called Theresienwiese (Therese's meadow). Referring to "Wiesn" describes the location of the festival grounds,and this is the word that locals often use when talking about the Oktoberfest.

3. Most Oktoberfest visitors wear Dirndl or Lederhosen

Oktoberfest is a place where many people love to wear traditional Bavarian clothing, called "Tracht". Generally, about 60% of Oktoberfest visitors dress up in the Bavarian Tracht, but inside some beer tents, it feels like almost 100% are wearing it.

Dirndl is traditionally worn by women and girls.

Lederhosen are traditionally worn by men and boys.

Nowadays, of course, everyone can wear whichever style they prefer.

No worries if you don't want to invest in these outfits as they can be expensive, wearing Tracht is not mandatory - but definitely more fun. Please avoid showing up in a cheap Halloween costume as it will easily identify you as a tourist. A nice alternative to a whole new outfit is wearing an accessory like a Bavarian hat or a traditional jacket.

4. You need cash

Card Payments are not accepted at Oktoberfest, but there are ATMs available, so you can withdraw cash in case you did not bring enough with you. However, the ATMs located at the festival grounds charge an extra fee, and there are often long waiting lines.

5. No big bags or backpacks allowed

No backbacks are allowed and bags should not be bigger than 20 x 15 x 10 centimeters (about 8 x 6 x 4 inch). Also, it is not allowed to bring any kind of glass onto the festival grounds. There are security checks at the entrances of Oktoberfest which inspect bags of all visitors.

You can leave your bag at the Oktoberfest bag drop close to the main entrance for a small fee.

It is completely fine if you want to bring water in a non-glass bottle.

6. It's more than just the beer tents at Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest offers a wide range of rides like Ferris wheels and rollercoasters, historical traditional rides, and games to win prizes , that will sure please visitors of all ages. During the day you can usually also find families and children enjoying everything Oktoberfest has to offer outside the beer tents.

Tipping the waiters at Oktoberfest is important, but it's also a nice gesture to leave a small tip for toilet attendants. Though not mandatory, they play a crucial role in keeping the festival clean. A tip of around 1 to 2 euros is appreciated.

The beer selection focuses on the local's favorite "Helles", a pale golden lager. For those who prefer something sweeter and less strong, there's the option of ordering a "Radler", which is half beer and half lemonade.

The specially for Oktoberfest brewed beers are stronger than normal ones,with around 6% alcohol. There is no need to rush to finish the beer as we recommend you to take it easy and just enjoy it. 10. When it's too crowded you can only enter a tent with a table reservation

Oktoberfest table reservations are a great way to secure a spot in the Oktoberfest beer tents and avoid crowds. When it is crowded, the tents close down and only with a table reservation it is possible to enter. Reservations can be made almost a year in advance per table, with a minimum of 10 people.
